Eyal Zamir Takes Command as Israel's New Chief of Staff
Zamir's appointment comes at a critical time for Israel, with the country facing ongoing security challenges and tensions with neighboring countries. His leadership and strategic vision will be closely watched, both domestically and internationally, as he works to achieve his goals of leading the IDF to victory and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Eyal Zamir, a retired Major-General, has been appointed as the new chief of staff of the Israeli army, effective March 6, with a vow to lead the military to victory and bring home all hostages held by Hamas.
Zamir, who has a history of involvement in military operations, including his time as the commander of the 7th Armored Brigade and the 36th Armored Division, has expressed a desire for Israel to be self-sufficient in its military capabilities. His appointment has been welcomed by some hard-right members of Netanyahu's cabinet, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has stated that Israel is preparing to occupy Gaza under Zamir's leadership.
Zamir took over as the 24th commander of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), replacing Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, who resigned due to the military's failure to prevent Hamas's October 7, 2023, onslaught. In his first speech, Zamir called for a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 onslaught, saying that it was necessary to reach the source of the problems and allow for repair.
As Zamir begins his tenure, he will discuss the appointments of senior officers, including around 60 brigadier generals and colonels, and will meet with President Isaac Herzog and other officials to outline his strategy for the IDF. With his experience and vision, Zamir is set to play a crucial role in shaping Israel's military future.
