FBI Charges Islamic Educator Imam Wisam Sharieff with Conspiracy to Produce Child Pornography

Updated :

A Texas-based Imam and Quran instructor, Wisam Sharieff, affiliated with AlMaghrib Institute, has been charged by the FBI for allegedly conspiring to produce child pornography. According to a federal complaint, Sharieff allegedly groomed a mother and her daughter to create and share explicit videos with him, highlighting concerns about abuse of trust within religious educational institutions.

The charges, filed under 18 U.S.C. Section 2251(a) and (e), allege that Sharieff manipulated a 50-year-old mother during a religious conference, convincing her to involve her minor daughter in intimate acts under the guise of spiritual growth. The mother reportedly produced multiple videos, which Sharieff then shared explicit content with her through the Telegram messaging app. This alleged abuse of trust sparked outrage within the community, with prominent organizations, such as MuslimMatters, severing ties with Sharieff.

AlMaghrib Institute has taken swift action, terminating Sharieff's employment and releasing a statement that the organization has no prior record of misconduct or law enforcement warnings about the Imam. The Female Scholars Network has condemned the allegations, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding communities from abuse and supporting survivors. The incident has rekindled discussions about the necessity of strict background checks and oversight within religious educational organizations.

As the case continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact the broader Islamic educational community and the emphasis on child safety and accountability within these institutions. The incident has already sparked a catalyst for ongoing discussions on the responsibility of organizations to protect children from abuse, and the need for swift and decisive actions against those accused of such heinous crimes.
