Karachi University Introduces New Dress Code

Updated :

The University of Karachi has issued a notification regarding a dress code for students, which has sparked debate on social media. The notification, which is a continuation of the university's efforts to provide guidance on the dress code, aims to maintain an educational setting and prevent provocative or distracting attire.

According to Dr. Nosheen Raza, the university's advisor for student affairs, the notification emphasizes the importance of wearing clean and modest attire that reflects "dignity and decorum". The dress code prohibits clothing such as shorts, sleeveless or tight-fitting clothes, and casual slippers, and advises students to wear clean and modest clothing that upholds the sanctity of the educational environment. The notification is aimed at guiding newly admitted students, and the university administration believes it will help maintain a respectful and modest appearance on campus.

However, the notification has also sparked concerns over the definition of "provocative, offensive, and distracting" clothing. Some have criticized the move, saying that universities should promote global citizenship and tolerance, not suppress critical approaches. Dr Maroof Bin Rauf, an assistant professor at the University of Karachi, commented that the university's dress code means attire that aligns with societal norms, but acknowledged that students should be better informed on what constitutes "provocative" dressing.

The University of Karachi has over 45,000 students, and the introduction of the dress code is seen as a way to guide students on appropriate attire and maintain a respectful academic environment. While the notification has sparked debate, the university administration believes it is necessary to ensure that students maintain a respectful appearance and wear clean clothes that align with societal norms.
